IntroductionWelcome to Planetary Calendar’s annual Astrology forecast for 2022, which is centered on the USA. Early in 2022 we publish our Chinese New Year (CNY) forecast for February 1, 2022, that explores the international scene. These global forecasts look at how the planets affect our communities, as compared to Sun Sign forecasts that divide the eight billion people on Earth into twelve signs. That’s a little too generic for us. Fortunately, the Planetary Calendar (PCal) uses a system with which you can quickly personalize each day’s transits to figure how you can best navigate these complex times, even if you’re not an astrologer. Just read the instructions and you’re off to the races. The PCal has been published annually since 1949 and you can find it at our website in print and digital formats. You can see the charts that we are referencing at www.planetarycalendar.com/forecasts.
2022, A Fascinating YearThis is a remarkable year, and we see that clearly through the ‘Dignities’, that define the favorite roles that the planets play, like actors on a stage. We explain the system in detail in PCal’s companion book. The planet with the greatest influence this year, through having control over the largest number of planets, is Saturn in its traditional Masculine Ruling (Extrovert Dynamic) Sign of Aquarius, Conjunct the Sun and Moon. Saturn’s highly social, broad seeing, but at times rigid energy will be the guide this year.
Meanwhile for half the year Jupiter is powerfully placed in its own Feminine Ruling Sign (Extrovert Responsive), Pisces, and joined by Neptune. With Jupiter and Saturn both in Extrovert Signs there is a sense of the world being powerfully polarized. These are the two most powerfully authentic Signs for the two planets so their strident voices will insist on being heard in the outer world, and they will both attract allies.
Because Saturn in its angelic guise has so much sway, expect this to be a fiscally and personally responsible year, inventive and industrious. People are going to be careful and practical in their spending and travel, focused on the future and their ambitions. Watch for a big drive towards formalizing relationships, so great news for wedding planners and contract attorneys with new types of partnerships forming. Jupiter is shining forth as the beacon of compassion and belief, while bonding with Neptune, the planet of imagination and hidden money. Jupiter’s influence will be pervasive and inspirational so expect to see an eruption of spiritual and social movements and unfortunately, alcohol and drug use.
Uranus in Taurus is playing its own game this year so climate change, innovative banking and land rights will be hotly contested issues. It will not be pretty in Washington DC for the mid-term elections with chaotic protests, and older legislators stepping aside in favor of younger candidates who are more invested in the future. The rise of younger leaders will escalate in May when Jupiter enters fiery Aries.
The Importance of LocationThe messages implicit in charts are not universal for the entire world. WHERE the chart happens matters. For example, calculate the exact New Moon for New York City and for San Francisco and the Sun and Moon are going to be in two different houses, while the planets at the Ascendant and Midheaven (angles) are going to change. So, the areas (houses) in which the major players (planets) are going express themselves are going to be different, and because of the shift of the angles the players that have the most leverage will change.
What is most obvious from looking at the charts for the New Moon in Aquarius, the year’s seed chart, is that on both coasts, and on the plains and mountains in between, this year the USA is in a responsive mode and focused on the home front. That’s not a bad. While the east coast is very much locked into the response mode, on the west coast people, organizations and governments will be more proactive in solving issues through cooperation and creatively using shared resources.
Even though we think of the USA as a world leader, it’s important to understand how it leads. The United States was founded in Cancer, the Sign of the Mother and it quickly and decisively reacts to evolving situations that it did not initiate. When it steps into a mess, it will take a leadership role to resolve the problem. For example, the USA did not start the Second World War, and it only came in after being attacked at Pearl Harbor. Then it produced awesome resources and overwhelming force, and then at the conclusion, the USA spent years cleaning up the mess and helping countries get back on their feet, including their previous foes.
On the East Coast there is going to be more arguments and discord, along with the forging of some new and unusual partnerships. With Uranus on the seventh house cusp (descendant) there may be dramatic changes in the Supreme Court and the USA judiciary in general. We expect to see big changes related to the housing market, along with new housing solutions. On the negative side, this also indicates large numbers of people having their housing disrupted by storms and other events. With a packed third House of communication in Capricorn, the media will be doing double time, with everyone trying to climb higher than everybody else, like seals scrambling up the rocks, trying to grab a place in the sun. That’s not surprising since this is an election year, and the balance of the congress is at issue. As we say in the video, the sense of polarization is not going away. Because Saturn is so close to the Sun and Moon it will feel very structured, while Jupiter and Neptune in the fifth house will show increased indulgence in drugs, alcohol, movies, video games and gambling.
The west coast experience will be very different. That disruptive Uranus in Taurus now resides in the eighth house so innovative, collective management of natural environment is a priority. The Sun Moon Saturn conjunction takes place in the fifth house of the heart and creativity, while the fourth house of the home and family will encourage stabilization and planning for the future. While the east coast will feel like the players can’t get out of their own way, on the west coast they’ll be doing the hard work of managing the farms and forests, while promoting creativity. In the west expect see numerous important endowments to promote the types of creative ventures that the region is known for, technology, computers, gaming, movies, agriculture and food science, with a focus on the long-term future. As we say in the video, the west coast is going to have a lot more fun this year than the east coast, where the hurricane and political season will be especially rough.
The Outer Planets Speak, but they don’t say that much that’s interesting! The outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, tell us about the big issues, out there in the world beyond our personal life. It is very telling that in 2022, only Jupiter is changing Signs and traveling fast. The biggest Planet, known historically as Zeus and Jove, starts the year at zero degrees of compassionate Pisces, then flies through the thirty degrees of the Sign and into aggressive and enthusiastic Aries in May. Jupiter turns Retrograde and returns to Pisces during the year, then turns Direct just before the end of the year to re-enter Aries. Use the PCal to get the exact dates.

Uranus, the Outlier The only outer planet not in a final Sign is Uranus, which has a tremendous amount of leverage in 2022. It is the planet of disruption, and it is in the sign of Taurus, the Earth. Uranus stays in a sign for seven years and is about half-way through its transit. The result is an increased numbers of hurricanes, floods and forest fires, not to forget the earthquakes being caused by fracking.
Because Uranus is in one of the Springtime signs of the Zodiac, those old lawmakers working inside their ponderous systems are having a difficult time handling the Uranian disruption. Consider how slowly those aged politicos and carbon-based industries have been at dealing with the dangers of climate change, despite years of warnings. There you see the conflict between the outer Planets in the staid, settled late signs of the zodiac, and Uranus in the second sign of Taurus the Bull in the China shop. In case you think that once Uranus leaves Taurus we will be in the clear, nope! As Uranus passes over the last degrees of Taurus and move into the early degrees of Gemini in 2026, expect to see some of the worst flooding, as well as other tumultuous events at it is triggered by a series of Stars.
The last time Uranus was in Taurus was during the later years of the Great Depression and the beginning of the Second World War. The time before that were the years before the Civil War, and the time before that was just prior to the Revolutionary War. That doesn’t mean that Uranus in Taurus is always a precursor to war, but it does set the stage for big changes that affect a large part of the population. This time it is happening while Pluto is in Capricorn, which it where it was at the USA’s founding. We could be looking at an international power struggle that could require the USA to redefine who it is, and how it is organized. Jupiter, the racehorse
Even though we experienced the slowing of the economy that came with the Saturn Jupiter Conjunction in Aquarius, coincidental with the Sun being at a low ebb in December 2019, hope is alive in 2022 thanks to Jupiter, starting the year at zero degrees Pisces, a commanding, compassionate, visionary position. Jupiter is moving fast in the first half of the year while being supportive of Uranus in Taurus. This is good and bad depending upon how close you live to a flood zone, because Pisces is a water sign, salt water, so expect coastal flooding to get worse. So, what’s the good news? It will also increase society’s shared belief that the world is in a self-inflicted climate crisis, and belief is essential to taking action! On a less positive side, this position will make people more susceptible to propaganda, so expect some pretty big lies to come out during the midterm elections.
But before Jupiter bolts into Aries, that Pisces influence may create an upsurge in church attendance, spiritual participation, alcohol and wine purchases and the expansion of the legal cannabis industry. The movement for national legalization and the end of prohibition may make great advances. Also expect the pharmaceutical stocks to soar thanks to continuing vaccine demand.
Pisces is the sign of the Pharma companies so having Neptune, which relates to hidden money and resources in Pisces speaks about the growing power of the pharma companies and the black market to influence national policies. It seems impossible to turn on the television to any commercial channel and not be bombarded with drug ads thanks to Neptune’s transit through Pisces. Pluto relates to the power of the small and in Capricorn, Sextile Neptune, it shows the power of a virus to support the industry. This connection between Neptune and Pluto is not all negative, there have been remarkable advancements during these aspects in the use of yeast, mushrooms and bacteria to create beneficial and nutritious products.
When Jupiter in Aries enters Aries on May 10th expect people to become increasingly outspoken about their beliefs and impatient for change and watch for the rise of some influential, younger personalities. There may be an uptick in environmental protests that become increasingly kinetic, aka violent. On the other hand, this fast Jupiter entering creative Aries will inspire a surge of inventions and entrepreneurship. End Note, the great balance In conclusion, while this year will see little political movement in the antiquated thinking that has inhibited progress towards solving global issues, we will see the seeds of a new approach germinating. The best strategy will be to recognize that our ability to affect big, external events politically will be limited, but allow time for the new ideas and approaches to spread. Businesses are investing in that future and where the money goes is where the future grows.
With Saturn and Jupiter both strong, being disciplined in your personal and spiritual growth will yield wonderful results. With Saturn in Aquarius having so much leverage this year, we should aspire to having a global vision. Jupiter in Pisces is saying that the need for compassion and imagination is paramount. Recognize what you are ambitious about and move in that direction. Then once Jupiter enters Aries in May, be noisy and let people know about your interests and pursuits. Watch the CNY forecast for Feb. 1, 2022 for the global picture and subscribe to our YouTube Channel Planetary Calendar Astrology for the weekly forecasts and Astro portraits. At the start of 2022 there will be sense that some institutions are in their final, ossified stages and need to be revamped, or replaced with newer systems to deal with the topical issues. This is due to all the outer planets, except the rebel Uranus in Taurus, being in the last three signs of the Zodiac. There is a great deal in our social structure globally, that is in the final stages of its cycle. This describes fossil fuels which are at the end of their usefulness, the repression of women which is fading because their talents are so valuable in a modern society, and the end of the belief that natural resources are unending and that the Earth will always provide, no matter how large the population.
What does that mean for us? In terms of those big things that are beyond our personal control, politics, economics and social movements, what was in place in 2021 will continue in 2022. The part that will change is how we feel about those events, what we believe, so expect the tide of opinion to turn in one direction, then turn again and again. On the positive side, we will finish the year with a strong sense of new beginnings with younger ideas that look to the future.
Another example of the changing of the tides, is the large number of US senators, who have a disproportionate influence in Washington DC, are senior citizens. They are much older and ethnically different than most of the people whose lives they impact. The majority of the baby boomers, the previously largest generation, are now at, or approaching retirement age. Many of them had been hanging on, continuing to work and often stifling the advancement of their younger colleagues. One of the results of Covid was that many of the Boomers did not return to work, choosing to retire, or begin businesses that they could operate from their homes, opening opportunities for the younger generation. However, the economy was addicted to the high level of industry exhibited by the Boomers so we are seeing the results of so many highly skilled and experienced people checking out at the bigger companies; labor shortages and production and delivery shortfalls.
